Overcoming the New Mommy Slump

I’m sure I am not the only woman out there that goes through the new mommy slump. It seems like every pregnancy I just let myself go. I don’t care about getting to the salon to get my roots covered, let alone spending time to put makeup on my face if I don’t have to leave the house. Usually it takes me a bit after I have my sweet little bundle to actually start caring again.

The difference is that after the baby, I am fighting exhaustion and am always out of time. So how does one overcome the new mommy slump when there aren’t enough hours in the day, and the moments you do have would rather be spent sleeping? I don’t have time to get to the nail salon, and I sure don’t have the time or energy to get all fussied up every single day.

I have started making time for ME! Yes, it sounds a little selfish but it is so important for me to steal a few minutes to myself. It doesn’t always happen, but I make a point to squeeze it in a few times a week. Most times it is just me getting away in the evening for a few minutes alone in the bubble bath.

I know it may seem silly, but having my nails painted makes me feel more “put together”. However, I don’t have time to keep up with nails at the salon every 2 weeks. So, my newest splurge on myself is a home mani. I hand the baby off for daddy time while I spruce my hands and feet up. It’s the little things that matter!

Another thing I let go during pregnancy is my hair. When I’m pregnant my hair grows way to fast to try and keep it blonde. So my natural dark starts quickly shining through. This time around I bought a box from the store and got it as close to my natural color as I could while the blonde grew off. But, now that our house is back into a routine with our time and our finances….I am headed back to the blonde. That 2 hours at the salon every other month is my happy getaway place. I realize this isn’t always an option so even if it is turning your bathroom into your personal salon, DO IT! I feel like a new person when my hair gets done.

It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Maybe it is just a few minutes with your feet up that makes you feel like a different more put together woman. Take those minutes and don’t feel guilty for it. Anything that can help you overcome the new mommy slump! When we are more refreshed, we are better at our daily tasks.

It is so easy to get in the habit of throwing on those yoga pants and t-shirt with your hair in a pony every single day. Trust me I pretty much lived that way over the last year! If I am honest with myself though I feel more human and “together” when I spend a little bit of time on myself. No, you won’t find me all fixed up everyday of the week, but you may find me with my nails done and some lipgloss with those yoga pants. Whatever makes me feel pretty and like I have it more together than I actually do!
